HISTORY

All of Us or None is an organization for the formerly-incarcerated & convicted individuals and their friends & family, who have been fighting for the restoration of our civil and human rights since 2003. Over the past 10 years, we have successfully “banned the box” in 60 different states, counties, and cities across the country—including in California, where government jobs cannot ask about one’s criminal history until after all qualifications for the job have been considered, effective July 1, 2014. See Assembly Bill 218, co-sponsored by All of Us or None.

FAIR EMPLOYMENT & HOUSING POLICY IN LOS ANGELES

This is only the beginning. Now, we’re asking Los Angeles City to:

  • Stop all unnecessary background checks for government and business jobs, as well as for housing;
  • Require employers & landlords to identify what offenses will potentially result in denial of employment or housing; and
  • Hold employers & landlords accountable.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Come join us, and add your voice! LA City Council is asking the public to come forward and tell them how background checks keep us from getting a job or housing. But those who fear us will also come out and oppose us. Because the City will write a law that favors those who speak loudest, we need everyone to join us and speak together, as we write letters, testify at hearings, and march down to the City Hall. Now is the time to fight back!

    My son is 23, extremely mentally ill and incarcerated. He is being held in extreme isolation in Solitary (SHU). The SHU (Solitary Confinement) Exclusion Law says if a person is found to be seriously Mentally Ill they must be removed from Isolation and placed in a secure MORE therapeutic Facility housing called an RMHTU. An RMHTU is a facility that focuses on Treatment more than Punitive punishment and allows for both security and ensures that the Mentally Ill do not actually get worse as they are incarcerated.

    I am asking you to read about the SHU exclusion bill that law makers created and familiarize yourself with organizations fighting for all prisoners held in Solitary Confinement (Solitarywatch.org) and the New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (nycaic.org ).

    In the meantime, would you sign the petition and share it widely if you believe that documented mentally ill persons should not be held in Solitary Confinement, often in a space no bigger than your closet, or an elevator, with 22 to 23 hours of lockdown in that cement cell, with NO HUMAN contact, no windows, often their food is also used as a form of restriction and their exercise period consists of going outside in a cement “dog run” like cage for one hour, while shackled, no balls, no exercise equipment, just meant to stand in the ‘run’ for an hour, and then back to the cell. Other forms of sanctions exist, including no books, no letter writing, sometimes no visitation, no commissary. It is no wonder that the highest occurrence of suicide in prison happens in Solitary. Please help me to help my son Masai.

    Thank you. Feel Free to just copy and paste the link, put it in your facebook, or twitter, or in an email letter and ask people to sign for us!

    I thank you on Behalf of my Son Masai and our Family, from the bottom of our Hearts,
    Tama
